Unlike other damselflies, spreadwings normally hold their wings away from their bodies when they are perched. (I say "normally" here, because I have seen young spreadwing adults hold their wings together over their backs.) Spreadwings do not stretch their wings out flat as dragonflies do, but hold them at an angle. Spreadwings tend to be a bit larger and have a heavier build than damselflies in the family Coenagrioniidae.
I did not notice this species in the Park during my stay in the summer of 2001. Bob Behrstock found it at Manzanita Spring on a visit in 2002, and I saw it on several occasions in 2003.
