Termite colonies consist of a king and queen and their offspring, sterile male and female workers and soldiers. None of these insects has wings. Each season a generation of winged reproductives is produced. In this photograph, the reproductives are assembling on the stump housing their colony prior to beginning their mating flight. Successful pairs break off their wings before establishing their new homes.
