King K Kingdom Philip P Phylum Comes C Class Over O Order For F Family Good G Genus Spaghetti S Species
In the material presented in this binder, the Kingdom is Animalia (the animals) and the Phylum is Arthropoda (from arthro for joint or segment (arthritis is an inflammation of the joint)) and poda for foot or appendage (you can go to a podiatrist if you have foot problems).
Each Phylum is divided into a number of Classes so here we can tell whether we are talking about insect-like creatures (Class Hexapoda), arachnids (Class Arachnida), millipedes (Class Diplopoda), etc.
Each Class is divided into a number of Orders so for the insect-like creatures (Class Hexapoda) we can talk about the dragonflies and damselflies (Order Odonata), the beetles (Order Coleoptera), the flies (Order Diptera), etc.
Each Order is divided into a number of Families so for instance in the dragonflies and damselflies (Order Odonata) we can talk about the clubtails (Family Gomphidae), the jewelwings (Family Calopterygidae), the darners (Family Aeshnidae), etc.
Each Family is divided into a number of Genera (plural of Genus).
The Species, a combination of the Genus and a Specific Epithet (a special descriptor), combine to give us an exact identification of the type of individual we are talking about. (Even at the species level we still do not distinguish one individual from another.)
As we move down from Kingdom to Species we become more and more specific about who or what we are talking about. Other classification methods are possible depending on the purpose.
EXAMPLE: Anax junius (the Common Green Darner) is the name of a species of dragonfly in the Genus Anax, which is in the Family Aeshnidae, which is in the Order Odonata, which is in the Class Hexapoda, which is in the Phylum Arthropoda, which is in the Kingdom Animalia.
EXAMPLE: Dodge Caravan is the name of a species in the Genus Dodge which is in the Family Vans which is in the Order Passenger Vehicles which is in the Class Motorized Vehicles which is in the Phylum Vehicles which is in the Kingdom Machines (other scheme arrangements are possible).
